As the UN highlights the humanitarian crisis a mile away from where Senator Obama chose to celebrate “Sderot” on his Middle East tour, Afshin Rattansi interviews an analyst in Gaza.
SDEROT, Israel — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says it’s in the interest of Israeli security to arrive at a lasting peace with the Palestinians, and called Iran the biggest common threat to U.S. and Israeli security.
Obama spoke at a press conference in Sderot, near the Gaza border. The city has been a frequent target of rocket attacks from Palestinian militants. Shards of rockets were in stacks behind Obama as a reminder of ongoing attacks.
In Obama’s words: “America must always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself against those who threaten its people.”
He also said that Jerusalem will be the capital of Israel, but the issue should be dealt with by the parties involved. Obama had raised eyebrows earlier in the campaign when he raised the issue; Palestinians also consider Jerusalem as their capital city.
And in an apparent show of friendship, the mayor of Sderot gave Obama a T-shirt at the end of the press conference. Also showing it to the pool of reporters, the shirt read “I [heart] Sderot.” Piercing the center of the heart appeared to be a missile.

What have the Arab built for themselves in the last centuries except governments that are based on a radical religious ideologies that deny basic rights to EVERYONE. Imagine a world where a child wakes in the morning to go to school, not to enlighten his mind with mathematics and chemistry and literature and to cultivate a sense of self and the motivation to succeed, but instead to learn the laws of a radical religion, to hate his neighbors and to hate the success of Israel.

Israel is a haven …
Israel is a haven for progress. Instead of hating Israel, people should take note of its success and try to mimic its domestic policies (i.e. the Arab countries). Israel was formed on the basis of capitalism and Western ideologies that affords its people freedoms and wealth unlike any other country in the region where totalitarianism is the standard. Israel was born out of the movement of indigenous people back to their homeland, the history if there unearthed by science.

Look, the situation …
Look, the situation is obviously very complicated over there and I have sympathy for both sides, but no conflict is one sided. Regardless of who started it, it’s not going to stop until both sides come to a consensus(sp?) about what to do. It’s history that Israel has its fair share of aggressive policies in the region as well as Palestine. While I am an Obama supporter, I am a bit troubled at this segment. While he appears to be supporting peace talks, he seems a little one-sided toward Isreal

I know Obama is way smarter than that. He knows the situation in Israel and Palestine is not black and white. You can see it in his face as he speaks. He knows he has to pander to the American Public, becuase most of them will not accept any type of criticism of the State of Israel. Any criticism of Israel will with a mathematical certainty destroy his chances at the Presidency. He has to play it smart and safe.
